The Brief

Pluk de Nacht is one of Amsterdam's most established cultural institutions — a free outdoor cinema festival running annually since 2003, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each summer to Het Stenen Hoofd on the IJ.

We were commissioned to design the festival's website from the ground up: a complete UI/UX system covering the film programme, deckchair reservation, streaming, and editorial content. The interactive front-end was custom-developed by our studio; back-end implementation was carried out in WordPress.

Designed for the Programme

The programme is the functional centre of the site. We designed a structured, filterable schedule — by date, location, and film type — where each film card maintains the visual language of the broader identity system. Typography, colour, and hierarchy were calibrated for legibility across screen sizes and lighting conditions, including mobile use on-site during the festival itself.

Interaction & Motion

The design required a fully realised interactive layer. Scroll-driven animations, page transitions, and contextual interaction states were designed and delivered as working front-end code, built to integrate into WordPress without loss of fidelity. The motion system is precise and purposeful — reinforcing the experience without overriding the content.

Social & Digital

Deckchair reservations are the festival's primary revenue mechanism. The booking flow was designed for minimal friction: screening selection, seat reservation, and credit distribution across multiple evenings. Optimised for mobile, with a clear information hierarchy and an interface that performs reliably under real festival conditions.
